Thank you for a fantastic Nevis vacation! We spent an idyllic week in Upper Calypso, and we are confident that we could not have found a more serene spot. The accommodations were bright, airy and well-appointed. We relished the self-sufficiency of staying in Upper Calypso, but were equally impressed by the attentiveness of Urban, who personally checked in on us during our stay, and Mildred, who made sure that the house was spotless for our arrival. We were continuously amazed by the sweeping ocean views from our veranda. With Oualie Beach practically at our door step, we couldn't help but to indulge in refreshing afternoon swims. We made a habit of evening walks on the beach, during which we soaked in the colorful sunsets and the evening Nevisian breeze. We found the people of Nevis warm and welcoming, and the local attractions diverse. Nevis has something for everyone: rigorous hikes and ocean kayaking for those in search of a physical challenge, rain forest tours and elaborately landscaped plantation properties for horticulturists and five star restaurants for gourmands. We particularly enjoyed a rain forest hike up in the mountain led by local naturalist Jim Johnson. Jim combined his encyclopedic knowledge of Nevisian flora and fauna with humor and enthusiasm to convey his nuanced view of the island's ecology. Our dining experiences were similarly memorable. Double Deuce offered scrumptious entrees right on the beach and the best coffee on Nevis. Dinner at Miss June's was singular and sublime. Miss June perfectly balanced the ambiance of a dinner party of old friends and a tony restaurant. We loved meeting new people over cocktails and hors d'oevres, and continuing those conversations in Miss June's elegant dining room. Miss June and her daughter created a sumptuous buffet of curries, salads, meats and fish. The food was delectably homemade and abundant. The only more entertaining aspect of the evening was Miss June herself, who regaled her guests with her good humor and hospitality. For visitors in search of urban flair, Charlestown, the island's commercial center, offers a compact constellation of restaurants and shops, from Unella's by the Sea for local fare, to the popular Chinese restaurants. Nevis is a place of peace and beauty. We are so lucky to have enjoyed the island from our aerie at Upper Calypso. In fact, we are already planning our return trip. Thanks again for sharing this treasure with us! Andrew and Carol, New York |
